Studying ahead February 9, 2007

In the Bar Exam Survival Kit, Adachi recommends going over some materials before you start the course (stuff that you’ve been doing in law school that is relevant). Hmm at least that is what I remembered. Anyway, I am glad that I went through notes that were emailed to me ages ago from Jeremy Blachman (writer of Anonymous Lawyer.) [I have a massive backlog of AL to read after the bar exam!].
Anyway, heaps of the lectures are still the same. The notes were really useful so now if I start zoning out it’s already there in front of me and I jot down my own notes next to whatever is there already. Saves the typing on the initial set of notes.
I still think Barbri’s idea to go home and condense notes down is important though. It takes ages and it’s been the bain of my existence but if I don’t do I dont’ think any of it absorbs. Take Constitutional Law. Sure, i get it, it’s not like HARD, but because I didn’t go and reduce it I keep muddling up stuff in my head. So now I’m going back and summarising the notes and it’s more clear to me.
If you are interested, check out Seperac. I wish I read his method ages ago and started on it. This guy is pretty hardcore – I am struggling just to get as much work as this guy done! Anyway, his notes (joe’s notes) are really spot on from the lectures for most of the subjects so if you wanted to get ahead, go check it out.
But I think also the most important thing is if you can get your hands on questions (eg PMBR books) it would be a pretty cool idea to just try and do some questions. I mean, it’s hard to look at the notes and think you’re going to remember it a couple of weeks/ months down the line when you’re bombared with loads of work and stress during the Barbri course.
A week behind on summaries February 3, 2007

I was so tired this week I didn’t get around to summarizing Trusts, Evidence and NY Prof responsibility. I was still looking at RP and Torts. Yes, bad. And now the 1/2 day NY practice is coming up and the Multistate Exam Workshop simulated exam. I am surely going to be stuffed. I think that is the bad thing about the lectures is although you can do it in anytime that you do want, you can always walk away/ take a break and then next thing you know you are behind. At least if you go to the class in person then you gotta go, whether you are tired or whatever!
On another note, why do the lecturers talk so fast?! I get this impending doom feeling that there are a lot more in the lectures than what it appears but they are now squashing a few things into as little time as possible and it all flies over your head.
Real Property lecture notes January 25, 2007

My hand is killing me and I’ve taken a bit of a break today from writing (& less mouse scrolling and typing as well)! So much stuff!
I did just scan all my RP lecture notes in though, and they are somewhere on this posting, just because it was such a labour of love.
I can’t get these files working and i am too tired to figure out the issue. I read the FAQ, it sucked so let’s just do it this way. Leave me a comment with your email address (which I will have to ‘approve’ and it won’t appear on here) and I will send you a copy.
Real property nightmares January 24, 2007

I couldn’t sleep very well last night, i kept thinking ‘why would someone convey such defective title’ … hmm it must be because where I am from, we are very lucky to have the [give away terminology] title. Anyway, so I decided to do lectures 2 and 3 in one go, then digest.
The lecture, Paula Franzese, talks fast and sings… and also there is a lot to write down in the lecture hand out so if you’re not paying attention for a split second you would have lost it. I can’t even type the lecturer, it’s easier to fill it out and sort it later.
If you’re in NY, or out of state you may be lucky (if you read this blog) – I may just scan up the lecture and put it online. I need to scan the lot as my backup anyway. This way, you could save yourself from any handcramps.
Bar Exam Survival Kit January 21, 2007

I saw someone mention this Bar Exam Survival Kit on another blog (forgot which one) and I decided to buy it. It is actually very good. I really dig all the exam writing tips and the law charts.
Jeff Adachi is based in California but given the MBE is also tested there I thought it would be a good idea to get the book. I’ve really found it useful and is a good supplement to the Barbri Conviser Mini Review.
The website that you buy it from is also quick with the response and shipping is pretty cheap. It got to me in a week (thanks, USPS).
Bah…. very behind January 18, 2007

I finally worked out how to effectively make Finepoints work for me. Notes from each subject actually amounts to 30 pages of typed notes…. which was daunting. It took me ages to do up NY Practice, but basically, I’ve been using the Main Headings in Fine Points as the big heading of a table, then each subject gets a column… so, what I effectively have is a ‘What’/ Elements & Rules/ [NY Distinction]/ Commentary
NY Practice took ages, because I LOATHE civil procedure. There is a good reason why I am not a litigation lawyer!!!
btw, is there anyone out there who isn’t a litigation lawyer/ judicial clerk who is blogging?!
Because I’ve had computer issues and stressing about it I’ve been a bit behind on the study. I’m working frantically to get the tables/ Finepoints summary AND keeping up the lectures. So I have lagged behind on the work. It’s a bit stressful… oh and of course this post is pure procrastination.
Phew.. another week over! January 12, 2007

Well lectures that is.
Contracts and Fed Con surprisingly ok. When they mentioned Hadley & Baxendale I had to laugh. … Is this the one case that every transactional lawyer harps on about?! [Indeed I have many a time, written pages of opinion on H & B...]
In the contracts lecture they were saying that you should just go back, review and learn so you are comfortable with it and move on, and spend the last 2 weeks cramming and memorising. Hmm I havne’ tbeen doing that. I’ve been revisiting each of the lectures in my spare time, so apart form some lyricless music that I am listening to, I am just listening to barbri lectures. Never in my life have I been so tied to a portable music player (yes, not even my beloved walkmans..) I’ve also been going back to my notes regularly, just skimming over the little details over and over again. It has taken me ages to come up with a super condensed set of notes for Criminal Law but I now get finepoints. I’ve got it up as a table and chart now, rather than little dot points.
Constitutional law January 8, 2007

Wow, finished Constitutional law 1 and realised it is not too bad! I think ours may be more difficult, especialy with the separation of powers. When the lecturer was talking about the trade or commerce provisions it was met with some familiarity – I guess you will get this when you have Federal power and the State powers!
Woops.. wrong program January 8, 2007

I realised on the weekend i’d been looking at the Manhattan paced program and not the out of town one! Just in time. So I gotta swap NY Practice around with Contract Law.
In other updates, I did some of the NYT questions and realised there were whole chunks of questions I couldn’t answer. I think, with best I am still scraping in with something like 5/10 JUST.. which is bad. I admit I am aided partially by some referring of the notes and I am not at that stage of reciting elements of anything like a text book yet

If anyone has tried to log into the Testing drills audio lecture and you are running OS X, you’ll find that the link to the actual audio lecture brings you to some junk page, including pop ups. It’s an OS X problem only. I tried every single browser and none of them worked.
When I rang Barbri, I was told to ring the help desk number. Folks, there is a 24-7 help desk number for technical support. It’s 877-385-6238.
Apparently I was the second person to complain. Wow. They said it would be fixed as soon as possible, and they said the stream did not have an address that I could plug into my Windows media player.
As of today it was still being fixed and I ended up doing this on a Windows computer – I have a schedule to maintain! And sure enough if I clicked on the properties of the player it told me there was a streaming address (since they wouldn’t give it to me I thought it be best not to publish it)! If you are keen to keep on track and you can’t wait, here is the page, as told to me by my browser, that features the streaming address – use this link after you’ve logged in. https://www.barbri.com/audiolinks/CriminalLaw.htm
I also had an issue with my Study Smart software – it doesn’t install anything! I rang up and the help lady told me to ring back on Tuesday.
The annoying thing about this tech support is that they don’t have a system to log issues so who is to know that I rang up on a Friday saying there was a problem? Are there no service levels with this service? Surely Thomson would have outsourced this (and if not perhaps they should think about doing it because it’s not working well inhouse.)
