Still a bit behind… January 24, 2007

My brain is tired and I can’t seem to keep up with all the assignments. Sometimes I stare at ebay listings, out the window, watch TV, cook… mindless things not requiring the mind to think TOO much but things that I can do which achieve something other than stress and confusion (fixing my network/ computer aside).
Today I did the first contracts question where I confidently knew some stuff. Cool. I’m slowly catching up on the questions I misse. I looked at the Bar Exam Survival Kit and Jeff recommends that when you first do the essays, you do it open book. I did that, it was good to have a safety blanket but I was only using it to refer to one or 2 points. So maybe I did learn something.
Meanwhile, since Barbri didn’t bother to give us self-study schedule a lovely Paced Program (yeah considering that we paid so much more for the ipod, you’d think we’d get a personalised paced program for us as well), we had to swap around everything ourselves and the assignments are out of wack. So maybe it’s a blessing I am slightly behind. I emailed them with the timetable as altered literally and the STILL haven’t gotten back to me
Back to the RP lecture I go.

The download created StudySmartSetup.zip. It automatically unzipped, creating StudySmartSetup. Double click on it, or right click or control/click on brings up the the StudySmartSetup application with a next and a cancel button. Clicking on next goes to a window with install and cancel buttons.
Since that did not work for you, I tried an an alternate method. In show package contents I opened the MacOS folder, opened mPlayer. For me this opened Terminal and ran a script and then opened the StudySmartSetup application. After clicking next and install it successfully installed and it accepted your product registration key. I am having the key reset so you should be able to use it.
Well, that didn’t work! Here was my response.
I ran the mplayer but it did not install it. But I know what is wrong with the program now. I have 2 accounts on my mac, one which is administrator which allows installation of programs, and a user account which is the every day account.
In short, it only installs when I am logged into the administrator mode.
I looked at the results of the script in Terminal and the problem with the program is that in user mode the script tries to copy into the Application folder, but does not ask for administrator’s permission. It just runs it as though it is fine.
Typically any other program that I have installed into the Application folder whilst in the user mode have asked for permission.
I hope this will help anyone else that has a problem with this. I am not sure whether anyone bothers to create an administrator account and a user account on their mac, but I have this as a security precaution.

If anyone has tried to log into the Testing drills audio lecture and you are running OS X, you’ll find that the link to the actual audio lecture brings you to some junk page, including pop ups. It’s an OS X problem only. I tried every single browser and none of them worked.
When I rang Barbri, I was told to ring the help desk number. Folks, there is a 24-7 help desk number for technical support. It’s 877-385-6238.
Apparently I was the second person to complain. Wow. They said it would be fixed as soon as possible, and they said the stream did not have an address that I could plug into my Windows media player.
As of today it was still being fixed and I ended up doing this on a Windows computer – I have a schedule to maintain! And sure enough if I clicked on the properties of the player it told me there was a streaming address (since they wouldn’t give it to me I thought it be best not to publish it)! If you are keen to keep on track and you can’t wait, here is the page, as told to me by my browser, that features the streaming address – use this link after you’ve logged in. https://www.barbri.com/audiolinks/CriminalLaw.htm
I also had an issue with my Study Smart software – it doesn’t install anything! I rang up and the help lady told me to ring back on Tuesday.
The annoying thing about this tech support is that they don’t have a system to log issues so who is to know that I rang up on a Friday saying there was a problem? Are there no service levels with this service? Surely Thomson would have outsourced this (and if not perhaps they should think about doing it because it’s not working well inhouse.)
