Online lecture issues with Macs December 31, 2006

If anyone has tried to log into the Testing drills audio lecture and you are running OS X, you’ll find that the link to the actual audio lecture brings you to some junk page, including pop ups. It’s an OS X problem only. I tried every single browser and none of them worked.

When I rang Barbri, I was told to ring the help desk number. Folks, there is a 24-7 help desk number for technical support. It’s 877-385-6238.

Apparently I was the second person to complain. Wow. They said it would be fixed as soon as possible, and they said the stream did not have an address that I could plug into my Windows media player.

As of today it was still being fixed and I ended up doing this on a Windows computer – I have a schedule to maintain! And sure enough if I clicked on the properties of the player it told me there was a streaming address (since they wouldn’t give it to me I thought it be best not to publish it)! If you are keen to keep on track and you can’t wait, here is the page, as told to me by my browser, that features the streaming address – use this link after you’ve logged in. https://www.barbri.com/audiolinks/CriminalLaw.htm

I also had an issue with my Study Smart software – it doesn’t install anything! I rang up and the help lady told me to ring back on Tuesday.

The annoying thing about this tech support is that they don’t have a system to log issues so who is to know that I rang up on a Friday saying there was a problem? Are there no service levels with this service? Surely Thomson would have outsourced this (and if not perhaps they should think about doing it because it’s not working well inhouse.)

Why the self study? December 31, 2006

Some people who have done the course say you should attend lectures. And others said not to worry about dong the lectures, because you show up and someone talks to you for 3 hours straight.

I’d previously been advised that it would be good to move to NYC in the winter, and go to the lectures and basically spend an entire winter sitting there learning. I could have study groups and share notes.

But since I thought the above option was expensive and I have never studied in groups anyway, this option was the way to go. So far, it’s been ok. Each lecture is broken up into hour chunks so I can take a break whenever I want. And I can study whenever I want. And, if I am stuck on something, I can go back and listen to the point again. :)

I wondered whether anyone else was blogging about doing the Barbri self study option… or the Barbri at all. I guess people are too busy to be blogging?

I am doing the self study option, for the NY bar exam. I have been armed with the books, a Paced Program and an iPod nano filled with lectures.
